The Epson Stylus Color 980 is a personal ink-jet printer that uses replaceable cartridges and has an integrated monitoring system for ink levels. Ink level monitoring is based upon projected levels versus a digital alarm built into each ink cartridge to alert when it has reached 40 percent and 5 percent. Whenever you add new ink cartridges or refill old ones, you must reset the Epson's EEPROM chip, which records all current ink levels and print projects.
